The Lockwood & Co. Series
By Jonathan Stroud
Available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound
First off, I don’t normally read horror. I’m not one of those gals that likes to scare herself silly. And yet, I love all of the books in the Lockwood & Co. series. Set in England it imagines a place where ghosts have proven to be real, and they are all over the place, with the greatest concentration in London. Although a ghost can kill anyone, only children and teens have the ability to see them. That means that all of the ghost hunting agencies employ kids. The series chronicles a trio of ghost hunters at a small independent agency as they explore hauntings and look to find a solution to “The Problem” of ghosts plaguing Britain.
As I mentioned before, I love these books. Sure they are well-written, and I’ve been a fan of Stroud’s since the Bartimaeus trilogy. They are spine-tingling horror, but they aren’t so graphic or gross that I was thrown off by the books. The ghosts are terrifying enough that I ended up deeply regretting reading one of the books at night while alone in my house. (That was not a night I had an easy time closing my eyes to sleep.) These books are perfect though for those who like a Supernatural level of adrenaline pumping fear in their horror. I would recommend these books to anyone who enjoys adventure thrillers like Jurassic Park.
