Covert Recommendation: A Study in Charlotte

A Study in Charlotte

By Brittany Cavallaro

Available on AmazonBarnes & Noble, and IndieBound

There are a countless number of reworkings of the Holmes/Watson duo originally created by Doyle. Some are reimaginings of the classic tales, others like The Beekeeper’s Apprentice take place after the Doyle stories end. This book though is set in our modern times with descendants of the Holmes and Watson families.

Charlotte is a bit of a reincarnation of her famous forefather with all of his brilliance and many of his less desirable habits and personality traits. Jamie Watson has just moved to America to attend an elite boarding school near his estranged father. Having grown up on tales of various Holmes/Watson pairings all his life, Jamie seeks out Charlotte and the two begin a rocky relationship that sees them through when Charlotte is accused of murder.

I love murder mysteries, and this is a good example of one that works for teens. The murder isn’t graphic, and there are all sorts of iconic Sherlock Holmes-style moments throughout the book. Although this is darker and moodier than a typical Holmes work, it makes it a great teen book. I would recommend this for anyone that enjoys books like And Then There Were Four.
